Comfy right out of the box

| I found out that I would be going on a 20 mile backpacking trip in 2 weeks. I didn't feel that was long enough to purchase and break-in some heavier duty boots, so I bought these because I already have and love the low top Siren Ventilators, but would need something with a little more support and that was waterproof for this hike. These boots delivered right out of the box. I took them on a short 3 mile hike to test them out and as expected they were comfortable right away. Though for the longer backpacking trip I could have used a little more support they really did their job: My feet were kept dry, comfortable, and I only got a couple small blisters in places that were not bothersome. We had some snow on the trail and later very muddy and wet trails and these kept my feet nice and dry. Additionally, the aggressive tread pattern provided excellent traction on slick surfaces. I'm sure that over the winter these will also get use daily due to their comfort and warmth. While I'd like to get something a little stiffer for longer hikes, these boots performed great overall. I am a huge Merrell fan, and I'd happily recommend these or my Ventilators to anyone. For those of you who wear orthotics, I do recommend doing so with these as there is not noticeable arch support. I also recommend buying a half size up if you want to accommodate thick hiking socks. I usually wear an 8.5, but the 9 worked out great. | |
Comfortable & nice looking hiking boots

| These Merrell hiking boots are comfortable and nice looking! I wear these for day hiking over rocky terrain/bouldering and they hold up well. While I haven't completely submersed these boots in water, they are definitely water resistant in puddles, mist and light snow. My feet stayed dry and warm (I had on wool socks as well). I bought these in a half size larger to accommodate my thick wool socks and this worked out great. I didn't need much of a break-in period for these boots; wore them around town a bit before I hiked in them and they were comfortable from the first step of my hike. The ankle support is great without digging into my ankles. They're not bulky or stiff like some of the hiking boots I've worn and they're the nicest looking hiking boots I've worn. I really love these! | |

| I've done a 3 day and a 4 day backpacking trip with these. They were very comfortable from the start. They seriously feel like pillows surrounding your feet. No blisters. I did a lot of harsh/steep scrambling on the last trip and they surprisingly held up great. Great traction. I'm skeptical about how durable they are. They are very soft and flexible. I will just have to wait and see. I think these boots are more water resistant than waterproof. They stand up to rain, but not to walking through shallow streams. Use the rocks/logs. The original insole they came with was not comfortable for me. I switched it out for the Lynco orthotics. Also, my measured shoe size is 6 1/2 and I had to buy a 7 1/2. | |

| I've worn these boots for almost one year now. No break in was needed. I've gone on 7-8 mile day hikes with light pack. I wear orthotics and these boots accomodate them well. I can wear mid weight socks or sock liner with heavier sock and I have no problem with fit. I usually hike on fire roads or dirt/sand and some loose rocky trails. I think they are too light for really rocky trails as I can feel the rocks when hiking. I would get the heavier weight backpacking boots if carrying 30-40 lbs. These are fine for day hikes or light pack. I have not tried them in water but I have hiked in 30 degree weather and they are warm. | |
Great Boot | |

| As an every day hiker who is on very rocky trails, I love this light boot. Not heavy and stiff like my others. This is the boot I pick for my longer day hikes. I added a good cushioning insole as I have low volume feet with narrow heels. It is one of the few boots that I've tried that can be tied tight enough to keep my heels from slipping. Only con is that they are not waterproof. That may be because they are becoming somewhat tired after hundereds of hard miles. I would buy this boot again without hesitation. | |
Good option for running Dog Agility

| I use the shoe for running my dog in agility. I needed a lightweight, waterproof shoe I could run in that also provided good ankle support for my previously injured ankles. This shoe fits the bill perfectly. For running dog agility in damp/wet grass, the shoe provides the moisture protection I need, while still being light enough to run in. Also, since the sole is not as "grippy" as most hikers, it provides the right amount of traction without causing my feet to get tangled in grass, which could cause a fall. | |

| I bought them to use while volunteering in northwestern Ecuador. They provided great traction and comfort while hiking in the Andes. Their waterproofing holds up well in moderate rain, but I wore them while hiking in the Redwoods during a downpour and water soaked through to my socks after about a mile of hiking. Although I like them a lot, I wish I would have spent the extra money and bought shoes with Gore-Tex. | |

| As with all my Merrell shoes, I was able to put them on and go. The best thing about Merrells is they feel so natural that I never have that, "Oh, I have to take my shoes off!" feeling. And, I have received compliments on every pair! | |

NOT waterproof. And smelly
| Workerbee at REI on 01/01/2010 | |

| I really wanted these boots to work. I have very narrow feet with narrow heels so it is almost impossible to find boots that fit. These almost did, but still had some heel slippage for me. Otherwise, they were very comfortable. However, there were two deal breakers. 1) NOT waterproof. For me waterproof is waterproof, there is no degree, i.e. a little waterproof. These were perhaps, water resistant. What I did was soak them in a bucket of water about two inches deep for 45 minutes. That is a little extreme perhaps but not out of the realm of possibility if you were walking through snow, mud or streams. Both boots leaked through on the side right around the ball of the foot. It looked very sealed there but guesssnot. As mentioned in another review, they took three + days to dry. 2) The smell! They had a really, really bad chemical smell. Even after sitting outside for two weeks and the above-mentioned soaking, they were still quite pungent. I thought that maybe they were made waterproof by a coating, not by a membrane, but looking on the Merrell site, they do indeed have a "waterproof" membrane. So I can't account for the smell. I don't know if these were an aberration as I only tested one pair. I saw one review of leaking and no other mention of the smell so maybe I am just especially sensitive. I am now working on seeing if the Vasque Briza GTX work. Very narrow, I don't know how people with normal feet would even fit into this but definitely waterproof when subjected to the same test. | |
quality control issue?

| I bought a pair of these yesterday. The left boot felt strange, as if I can feel the ground through the boot at the toe area, but nothing look obviously wrong. They look great, fit well, and felt comfortable when I was walking around in the store on carpet. However when I took them out to the real world the hard concrete and asphalt came right through the bottom as if there were no padding at all. I am using super feet insole in place of the thin insole they came with. There is cracking in the grey rubber already. This is after a few hours of wear? I do not understand the other reviews for this boot except maybe I got a defective pair. But it is hard to tell since the REI store do not have more than one pair of these in my size. | |
Attractive but less than durable

| I use these boots to hike in the Andes and climb around archaeological sites. Within the first month of this field season and the use of these boots, the sole started to separate from the front of the boot. Then all the sewn sections started to separate. They feel very narrow and I have twisted my ankle several times using these. They would be great for a casual walker needing a more attractive, versatile and practical walking shoe but they're no good on the trail. | |

| I've had many Merrell hiking/trail shoes. I needed a waterproof boot for a long adventure into the Grand Canyon. I bought a 1/2 larger than my normal size. The shoe fit like my true size and after I put on my hiking socks, they felt on the edge of beeing to small. The tread and suport were awesome. The laces stayed tied with no adjustments needed. I hiked down the South Kiabab trail with no problems. The rest of the 10 mile hike was not comfortable. I had 7 blisters and acheing feet like there was no insole in the shoe. The hike out 2 days later was rough. The blisters were around my foot like the shoe was too narrow. I love this brand but this shoe was a miss for long backpacking trips. | |
Super comfortable, but waterproof? No.

| I purchased these boots in a desperate attempt to find waterproof boots that would keep my feet dry in the mountains of West Virginia... and they have been a sore disappointment. After only three weeks of use, both boots began leaking at the toe in only mildly rainy/drizzly conditions, and within an hour my feet are soaking wet. The other bad thing about them is once they are wet, they take FOREVER to dry out (I'm talking 3+ days, with insoles removed), which is very inconvenient for my job. Good things about these boots are that they are super comfortable, and required only about four days of break-in time. | |
